Inner Spaces: New Writing by Women from Kerala

This rich ad varied selection of stories provides a taste of women’s writing in Kerala from the Thirties to the present day. Stalwarts such as Lalithambika Antharjanam, Saraswathi Amma, Kamala Das and Sara Thomas finds a place here as do several younger writers. Many of them are translated for the first time. The stories reflect an intense awareness of women’s condition as well as of the suffering and humiliation brought about by male domination. Torn by the impulse to rebellion and the pulls of tradition, home and family, the women protagonist in these stories reflects many of the concerns of contemporary feminists in India today, while at the same time showing the particular specificity of Kerala as a state.
