The word ‘bandish’ is generally used in the art (raga) music of North India to mean a ‘Song’, Within the frame of a raga, usually with words in brij/ hindi, to give form or structure and employed with a sure eye to exploit musicality of the phonic – phonetic contents of the words. In itself bandish takes one to three minutes for its rendering , but the exposition of a raga, utilizing the flow of the bandish may take from live minutes to an hour or more; – and the entire is the music of the performance of the ‘raga’.
